This week is all about books.
On Monday 6th, we had National Read a Book Day.
With the two early years standards, the Early Years Practitioner L2 and the Early Years Educator L3, apprentices are used to working with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework. Within the prime areas there is ‘Communication and Language’ which leads onto ‘Literacy’. With more than 10% of all children and young people having long-term problems with speech and language, supporting the early years in this area of their development is essential. The EYFS framework has been updated, from 1st September this year, with a new focus on early language and extending vocabulary. Improved speech and language impacts on a child’s skills across all areas of development.

I just love that quote; I always have about 3 or 4 books on the go at once! The importance of reading and developing a love of books is something that should be encouraged from birth. And actually, all new-borns now receive a bag from The Book Trust to support that interest from as early as possible.
And today we have International Literacy Day. The 8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.
When an apprenticeship is decided on, the apprentice is going to experience a whole new selection of recommended and essential reading. And with Apprenticeships offering standards from Levels 2 to 7, without having to attend college and/or university, it gives everyone an equal opportunity to education and development, and extending them to read books/articles/documents that otherwise they may not have considered.
As an End Point Assessment Organisation, the EPAs we deliver, or are in the process of gaining recognition for, are all around early years, children and young people. Our Independent Assessors all have a strong background in their field as well as assessing.
